Hong Kong

Hong Kong... The Shoppers' Paradise

Besides the endless choices of mouth-watering Chinese cuisine, little has been told about Hong Kong, especially when it comes to history. This small island to the south of mainland China was originally full of mountains and rocks of various sizes with no apparent values. The British Empire during the colonial period, however, had exquisitely cut these rocks and turned them into valuable gemstones of the Far East. Despite returning into the mainland China's arms, Hong Kong still welcomes throngs of million visitors each year, especially from mid-September to February, when the weather is pleasant.

A stroll along the island's old architecture, a fun visit to the famous characters of Hong Kong Disney Land, a trek through a myriad of Cantonese and seafood restaurants, an endless shopping spree, and a spectacular sightseeing at a spot overlooking the Victoria Harbor. Enjoy it your way!

Must-see Highlights

Repulse Bay

The most beautiful, wide crescent-shaped beach is where the sacred gigantic statues of the Queen of Heaven and the God of Mercy (Guanyin) are located.

Clock Tower

An important landmark on Tsim Sha Tsui that was erected in 1915 remains a timeless symbol of the colonial period.

Golden Bauhinia Square: The giant statue of a golden Bauhinia blakeana, a gift from the mainland China, stands prominently in an open area where the ceremonies of the handover of Hong Kong from the British government in 1997 took place.

Wong Tai Sin Temple: A famous temple boasts the traditional Chinese architecture right in the heart of Kow Loon.

The Peak or Victoria Peak

The Peak or Victoria Peak is a popular destination among tourists. It is the highest view point in Hong Kong where visitorscan enjoy stunning panoramic views; from the Victoria Habour to the towering skyscrapers. In the evening, visitors can enjoy the spectacular light display from the Kowloon side, as well as the light and sound performance from the Symphony of Lights. Other highlights include taking The Peak Tram, which is more than120 years old and where the view can be enjoyed from its windows. On the top of the peak lies the Peak Tower, a tower boasting outstanding architecture. The tower houses restaurants and shops where you can buy souvenirs. The Sky Terrace 428 offers impressive panoramic views of Hong Kong.

The sale signs are easily spotted across the island where designers' clothing, cosmetic products, perfume and electronics are offered on discount. The highlighted shopping areas include Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui, Nathan Road and Mong Kok. Handicrafts, Chinese tea, gold ornament and Chinese ceramics are also on the list to check out.

Hong Kong at night cannot be outshone by the day, as the dark sky is lit with beautiful lighting. The memorable "Symphony of Light" show takes place every night at buildings surrounding Victoria Bay, starting at 8p.m. A ride up to the summit of Victoria Peak also gives you a scenic night view of the show, as well as a vantage point from Avenue of the Stars, where Hong Kong actors and actresses have left their hand prints on the street.

Delicious Menu

The seamless mix of western and eastern food has found its own home in Hong Kong, where seafood, international cuisine and the popular bubble tea are served daily by excellent chefs. The perfect blend of Hong Kong tea was invented after the British colonial period. Stop by at old tea houses for some bakery products, such as the famous egg tarts. Make sure you get to taste the Cantonese congee--fine rice porridge that was slow-cooked till it became fully mixed with the soup. For a well known choice of food, Dim sum never fails its followers who can enjoy the delicious stuffing with hot tea. Finally, the Hong Kong egg noodle has been not only a staple of the locals, but also the visitors' favorite, especially the shrimp wonton and minced pork that come with it.
