Gateway to India

From the old city of Bombay, Mumbai has rebranded itself with rapid economic growth to the point it has become the most pivotal city in South Asia. The metropolis is home to financial centres, investment hubs and "Bollywood" production houses.

In Mumbai, you will never run out of things to do. Activities on offer include a trip to the shore of the Arabian Sea, a sightseeing tour of Gothic architecture, gallery and museum hopping, shopping and eating galore. With a perfect blend of old and new worlds, the city of Mumbai well-deserves its nickname of the "London of Asia".

Must-See Sights and Activities

Gateway of India

The most recognized landmark for all travellers to Mumbai is a monument erected to commemorate a visit by King George VI and Queen Mary of England in 1911. The bright yellow basalt structure combines the style of the Roman triumphal arch and 16th century Gujarat architecture. The best time to visit is at sunset when the iconic monument is touched by soft light.

Elephanta Caves

Explore the sculpted caves that were carved 1,500 years ago to celebrate a war victory and to worship Hindu gods. The most famous sculpture is a 6m-tall Trimurti depicting a three-headed Hindu God Shiva. It is believed Trimurti's blessings could bring worshippers happiness, along with prosperity in love and work.

Marine Drive

A 3km-long boulevard running from the shore of the Arabian Sea through Chowpatty Beach to Malabar Hill, Marine Drive is the most scenic point on Black Bay. Each afternoon, travellers and the locals alike enjoy the beach scene and watch the sunset and sparkling nightlight along Marine Drive. It’s a mesmerizing view that has earned the boulevard the nickname of "Queen's necklace".

Colaba Causeway

Prepare yourself for an abundance of dazzling shops and restaurants. Whether you want to buy an Indian-style bracelet, colourful silk bag, stone or brass Ganesh statue, or silk, Colaba Causeway is the place to come.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

Formally known as Victoria Terminus, the historic train station feaetures a charming combination of European and Asian architecture. After 10 years of construction, the headquarters of Mumbai's Central Railways boasts a mix of Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival and ancient Indian styles. Thanks to its invaluable history, the station was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj VastuSangrahalaya

For those who are interested in history and ancient artifacts, a visit is highly recommended to The ChhatrapatiShivajiMaharajVastuSangrahalaya (CSMVS) formerly known as the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India. This is one of the best museums in the country and was built to celebrate a visit from the Prince of Wales.

Dhobi Ghat

Dhobi Ghat is known as an open air laundromat where more than 2,000 washers go to clean clothes of all types from all over Mumbai with their hands. The best time to witness the washing fest is early morning.

Ganesh Chaturti

The biggest festival celebrating Ganesha, Ganesh Chaturti is held during late August and September every year. During the event, worshippers believe Hindu gods will descend to Earth to give blessings on his birthday. Locals dress up and join the parade around town before floating a Ganesha statue in the sea.

Delicious Dishes

Indian food is one of the world's most popular cuisines and there's no better place to taste its authenticity than Mumbai. The detailed cooking process and heavy use of spices for each menu makes Indian food all the more flavourful. Each region of the country has its own unique dishes and eating style. People of some areas eat their dishes with rice, some with naan. Most dishes are made of chicken and goat meat since Indians worship cows and consider them holy.

Among the not-to-be-missed menu items are basmati rice, a fine rice baked with spices served with goat and chicken meat; naan, sticky but soft bread served with curry; and tandoori chicken, prepared with yogurt and spices and crispy outside but soft in the middle.

Chai tea is hands down the best drink on offer in India. It is made of tea, milk and a combination of spices, such as cinnamon, cumin and cloves.
